History:

A USA export model selling new through dealer Hoffman in New York on April 6th, 1959 to Donald Patterson. It was taken back to Hoffman for routine service through 1960. Coming to California to reside for many years in the Ventura area. Discovered in good original condition when the present owner purchased in the early 1980s and has owned it for 35 years. Only four owner’s from new.

Restoration:

A complete professional restoration by Bill Perrone of the Parts Shop in Huntington Beach, California. This 356A was disassembled, taken to bare metal and rebuilt to factory standards by Marque experts. The body and all metal work were done by Robert Marianich, famous for having won the “Riddler Award” at the Oakland Roadster Show. The paint was done by Joe Leweck of Symmetrics in Torrance. The transmission was done by Jon Bunin of the Werkstatt in Vista. The engine was done by Bill Perrone of The Parts Shop in Huntington Beach.

The interior in leather was done by Auto’s International in San Diego. Then Bill and his team put the car together to factory standards. A variety of photographs and receipts documenting the process are available. The car had a variety of service work done to include carburetor rebuild, brakes, wheel cylinders, engine service, wheel alignment and more in 2017. Then in May of 2026 an engine service, oil change, spark plugs and carburetors rebuild was performed, plus new Vredstein tires. The car has only been driven 3,527 miles since restoration, still in stunning condition. Only driven 220 miles in the past 8 years.

Condition:

Striking appearance in Fjord Green with US export over-rider bumpers. Outstanding panel fit with factory standard door and lid gaps. Still with serial number stampings in both doors, front hood and rear engine lid. Date stampings on fuel tank and fuel sender. All wheels correctly dated stamped, as are instruments. Has Kardex matching engine and transmission. One of the nicest “Convertible D’s” one could hope to find.

Of Note:

Only 1344 Drauz bodied Convertible “D” were produced by Porsche. They were the ultimate evolution of the Speedster, still with Speedster body, but with more upright windscreen, high bow top, roll up windows and Coupe seats. Much improved transmission and other features, a much rarer car.
