History:
Lotus Historic Registry records confirm a build date of 8 March 1962. Original color white. Delivered to first owner in Monterey Mexico. With three known owners in Mexico it then came to California in 1983 to the famous Lotus collection of Alex Bollinger.
Alex owned one of the two Lotus 62 for 35 years and bought his 1962 Lotus Elite brand new and kept it until 2025. He only collected completely original cars.
It then sells to Jim Brown who races it in historic races on the west coast. This history is well documented by John Oakley of the Lotus Registry. Documents between owners, old bills of sale and logbooks going back to 1983.
It is also recognized by Duncan Rabagliatti of the FJHRA (Formula Junior Historic Racing Association).
Condition:
One of the most authentic, original, and unmodified Lotus 20 one could hope to find. Still with original frame, numbered engine, and numbered VW gearbox. The original white paint is found under the green paint on the original body. It is a drum brake car as delivered. The Ford 1.1-liter engine was last rebuilt in 2017 by local expert Bill Schlossnagel and produced 113 HP on his dyno.
It was last raced in 2022 and has about 5 hours’ time on it. The VW 4 speed gearbox was rebuilt in 2022 and has no time on it. It still has a Lotus stamped bell housing. The chassis ID tag is original as are many other features. The water is now plumbed outside of the chassis tubes.
Documents:
Old FIA HTP papers from 2011. Logbooks dating back to 1983. SVRA Gold Medallion, correspondence with John Oakley of Lotus Registry, correspondence with Duncan Rabagliati of FJHRA, race preparation receipts, engine build and dyno sheet and other records.
Spares:
Original alloy fuel tank, original seat and upholstery, and a Ford engine.
Of Note:
An opportunity to get a very original, well documented, authentic Lotus 20 Formula Junior with a great history that can be ready to race with a set of tires and a general race prep. One can take part in the Lurani Trophy and Formula Junior Championship in Europe and be a potential race winner in the drum brake class. There is still time to enter the two great Formula Junior events in California at Velocity Invitational Sonoma and the RMMR Laguna Seca.
