Description:
Volkswagen built a special model in the Karmann Ghia. It was designed by the Italian firm Carrozzeria Ghia and built by Karmann. The “low light” design of the late 1950’s had many distinctive styling features: Headlights - Positioned roughly 50mm lower on the front fenders compared to late 1959 and 1960 models. Taillights – Unique rectangular peaked rear light assemblies. Vents - Small horn grilles ("nostrils") on the front nose. Bumpers - delicate blade-style bumpers. Badge - 'eared' side Karmann badge. Interior -Painted body-color metal dashboard instead of the padded dashboards introduced on later models.
Replaced by the raised-headlight design in the late months of the 1959 production year (around August 1959) to meet regulatory changes.
These early Karmann Ghias have a loyal following of collectors and are appreciated for their design and ease of use.
History:
The Volkswagen Zertifikat shows a build date of 31 October 1958 and confirms the car was built in the colors Bamboo with a Deep Green roof. It was a US export model with seal beam headlamps, red rear tail lamps, MPH speedometer, and white wall tires. Previous owners were well known car collector Jerry Seinfeld, Volkswagen and Porsche experts Scott Hendry of Scotts Porsche and Bill Perrone of the Parts Shop.
Condition:
A very original rust-free low miles example still with original sheet metal, floors, and upper body. The exterior of the car was repainted in the past 10 years, but it still retains original paint in the front trunk, engine compartment and parts of the interior including the dash and hand brake. The lights, lenses, trim rings, are original. Most of the parts on the car are original. It is equipped with the rare factory air blower, and rear window defroster. The carpeting was redone in German square weave wool. The seats were reupholstered in leather, but the door panels are original untouched as is the headliner.
Recent Service:
A complete brake overhaul, replaced all wheel cylinders, master cylinder, brake shoes, and rubber brake lines. All the body rubber seals were replaced. A complete engine service with lube and oil change. A new battery and new tires.
Of Note:
This example of the highly sought after Low light Karmann Ghia has a celebrity ownership history, is a stunning original car with original shell and mostly original parts, matches the factory build sheet and has had a recent service. The engine appears to have never been removed from the car. This would coincide with the various documents and owners believing the car has just 80,020 miles. An example this correct is very hard to find.
