1953 Porsche 356 Pre-A 1500 Cabriolet
|Color||Strawberry Red (C 524 A)|
|Interior||Light Tan Leather|
Porsche Factory Kardex shows this Pre-A 1500 Cabriolet was built on May 21, 1953 with Reutter Coachwork in Strawberry Red (C 524 A). Then imported by distributor Max Hoffman of New York, NY. It is one of 394 Pre-A Cabriolet built in 1953.
Highlights of the US market Cabriolet design included the larger 1500 engine, a tachometer and Porsche crest on the VDM steering wheel horn button.
It would sell to its first owner Harry Mershimer of Poland, Ohio. By 1957, Mershimer had installed a Pepco supercharger for added performance. In March of 1958, Mershimer and his unique 356 were featured on the cover of Porsche Panorama. The feature article described the car, its supercharger and Harry’s engineering in great detail.
The car was restored in the 1990s, to its original color combination and still retains its original engine and transmission. The current owner, who has owned the car for about 25 years, has driven it and serviced it regularly. One of his first events was completing the 1999 California Mille successfully. Today, the car is serviced and ready to drive.
A 1990s restoration always kept in a climate-controlled garage as part of a large Porsche collection. Routinely serviced by a skilled mechanic. With some patina, yet still a nicely presented example of a very rare Reutter 356 Pre-A Cabriolet in original colors and still retaining its original matching engine and transmission. Rust free with good panel fit. Now on 15” wheels. It can be used with the original Solex carburetors or with the Pepco supercharger – part of its early history.
Can be run with original twin Solex carburetors as built or the 1950s period Pepco supercharger as was part of its history. Both are included with the car. Mechanic of the last 20 years is available for discussion.
