History: The Mercedes build sheet and 300SL Registry documents show this car selling new to Ralf Haessler in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on July 20, 1955. It is then purchased by Anthony Anderson of neighboring St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1959. Mr. Anderson owns this great car for more than 40 years. He takes it to noted 300SL restorer, Bruce Kelly of Lake Country Classics, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where it undergoes a comprehensive 2.5 year restoration, which is completed in 1999. A few years later it sells through a dealer to its present owner who has a large collection of post-war sports cars.
Condition: The restoration by Bruce Kelly was a full, body-off, frame up rebuild of a great two-owner original car. The body was removed from the chassis. The chassis was inspected and restored. The body was stripped to bare metal and re-sprayed in stunning Mercedes silver. The restoration also included a rebuild of the engine, gearbox and suspension, electrics, wiring, gauges and all the small details. In addition, in 2007, over $91,000 worth of work was done by Canepa Design, of which $38,000 was for expertly engineered air conditioning. In July 2011, the car was serviced by noted 300SL expert, Hjeltness Restoration.
Comments: Only 1400 300SL Gullwings were produced. This example had only three registered owners from new. It has undergone a comprehensive restoration and had a recent service. It is equipped with its belly pans, toolkit and has good records. The air conditioning is a great addition for those who love to drive the 300SL. It is eligible for most historic tours, rallies, or the odd outing, and it is good enough to show.
